At the sustainable seafood consultancy FishWise, Mariah Boyle uses her collaboration skills to help seafood companies set commitments to improving traceability and social responsibility and to combatting IUU fishing.

Workshop at Seafood SummitMariah is a champion of collaboration between diverse stakeholders to combine sustainability efforts. In 2015, she was selected by the National Fisheries Institute to participate in its Future Leaders program, and in 2016 the influential online trade magazine IntraFish named her as one of the industry’s “40 under 40” future leaders. At the 2015 SeaWeb Seafood Summit, Mariah co-hosted a successful workshop with the NFI Traceability Working Group and representatives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. State Department. Her recognition by these organizations reflects the positive nature of the relationships she forges and her success in balancing diverse stakeholders’ perspectives and values.

More recently, Mariah has been bridging the gap between social and environmental issues by establishing relationships with social science experts, generating white papers, and creating resources for the seafood industry. Her work allows companies to have the information they need to set ambitious goals for improvement in environmental and social responsibility.

Mariah Boyle and a fisher taking data on a beachMariah’s story inspires in many ways, mainly because of the unwavering focus, dedication, and work ethic she brings to tackling today’s most complex seafood issues. She has worked hard to create solutions that deliver shared value, ultimately creating change on the water and improving working conditions. She is able to anticipate issues and generate resources that educate and empower stakeholders to address them. Her story mirrors the upward trajectory of sustainable seafood itself.

In her eight years at FishWise, she has seen the topics of her work—sustainability, traceability, and now social issues—become mainstream, and has grown the FishWise Traceability Division from a team of 1 to a team of 10. She has demonstrated that much can be achieved by bringing different sectors within the seafood industry together across diverse platforms and working groups.
