Founded by Dave Rudie in 1977, Catalina Offshore Products was once exclusively a sea urchin/uni wholesaler. Today it is one of the largest buyers of local seafood in San Diego, specializing in wild species found off the West Coast, from Southern and Baja California to the Pacific Northwest. Acting as a direct receiver, it encompasses a wholesale division, online store and walk-in fish market and counts some of the top chefs in the U.S. among its customers. The company’s ongoing commitment to providing responsible seafood choices and promoting full utilization has enabled collaborations with a network of respected industry partners, including NOAA, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Seafood for the Future and Seafood Watch. Currently, nearly 75 percent of its offerings are sustainably sourced and traceable to the fishery or boat. Of those rated by Seafood Watch, 91 percent are “Best Choice” or “Good Alternative”. Catalina Offshore employees nearly 75 individuals and proudly, is still family owned and operated.
