After conducting marine conservation works in the Maldives and Malaysia, Wakao joined Greenpeace Japan as a Senior Ocean Campaigner, where he started the Sustainable Seafood Market Project. In 2015, Wakao founded Seafood Legacy, a Tokyo based sustainable seafood consultancy, to build Japan-centric solutions for the seafood industry by addressing the importance of domestic business-led initiatives to create a driving force for regulatory reforms. Wakao also serves as an Expert Advisor of the Cabinet Office Council for Promotion of Regulatory Reform Fishery Working Group, and a Committee Member of the Fishery Agency Wide Sea-area Fisheries Adjustment Commission. Passionate about bridging global initiatives and the Japanese market, he also actively engages in global collaborative efforts such as Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions, Global Sustainable Seafood Initiatives, and Global Seafood Ratings Alliance. Wakao holds BS in marine environmental science and marine biology.
