A fearless fisheries minister who’s led a high-profile campaign against harmful fishing practices, a collective effort to combat large-scale illegal fishing in East Africa, two chefs who step far outside their kitchens to promote sustainable seafood, and a foundation breaking new ground in preemptive protection of Indian Ocean tuna are SeaWeb’s 2017 Seafood Champions. The announcement came at an awards ceremony held 5 May 2017 at the SeaWeb Seafood Summit in Seattle, Washington, USA.

Seafood Champion Award for Leadership
The Seafood Champion Award for Leadership went to Susi Pudjiastuti, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Republic of Indonesia (represented by Mr. Rifky Hardijanto, Secretary General of the MMAF)
Seafood Champion Award for Advocacy (tie)
The Seafood Champion Award for Advocacy went to the International Pole & Line Foundation, here represented by Adam Baske.
Seafood Champion Award for Innovation
The Seafood Champion Award for Innovation went to FISH-i Africa, here represented by Per Erki Bergh, Director of Stop Illegal Fishing
Seafood Champion for Advocacy (tie)
The Seafood Champion Award for Advocacy went to Ned Bell, Ocean Wise Executive Chef at Vancouver Aquarium, and Founder, Chefs for Oceans

The Seafood Champion Award for Vision went to Matt Beaudin, Executive Chef at Monterey Bay Aquarium.

2016 Seafood Champion Awards
Winners Announcement at the SeaWeb Seafood Summit in St. Julian’s, Malta
Seafood leaders chose a retail executive who set the bar for sustainable seafood in the United Kingdom, a Cornwall fisherman who influenced EU policy and technology innovation, a coalition of Pacific Islands nations that acted aggressively to ensure the health of their tuna fishery, and a Maldives ministry that pushed sustainability for Indian Ocean fisheries as the 2016 Seafood Champions.
Finalists Announcement at Seafood Expo Asia, Hong Kong
On September 9, 2015, the finalists in the 2016 Seafood Champion Awards were unveiled at the sixth edition of Seafood Expo Asia in Hong Kong. Dawn Martin, President of SeaWeb, was joined by Suzanne Gendron, Director of the Ocean Park Foundation in Hong Kong and a 2016 Seafood Champion Awards Judge, to make the announcement to a crowd of seafood industry professionals and media.
2015 Seafood Champion Awards
The 2015 Seafood Champion Awards were held on the first night of the Seafood Summit, February 9–11, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans. At the closing of the first day’s program, Seafood Champion Awards attendees gathered for a networking Happy Hour in the hotel.
